It's Fall again and I'm noticing shifts beginning to happen in my body as the weather changes and the days start to shorten. I'm noticing I need an extra bit of care and need to slow down to help balance out my body. According to Ayurveda, Fall is the season of Vata and with it brings qualities of dryness, cold, change, roughness, mobility and wind. Stress also drives Vata out of balance and the Fall season is generally busy and many of us experience more stress during this time, so bringing balance to our bodies during this season is very important. We can do this through yoga, self-care rituals and brining in opposite qualities of vata to help balance out any excess. Below are some simple yogic tips to help support the body and mind as we transition into Fall.
Ground your energy through meditation and more restorative and contemplative yoga asanas. Think long held vajrasana, supta baddha konasana, viparita karani, savasana and smooth slower flowing sun salutations.
Establish a daily routine to help balance out excess Vata. Set a regular time for sleep and wake up, eating, work, yoga practice, meditation, exercise and 'you' time. Routines are a wonderful way to bring more balance into our lives. I like to start my day with yoga and meditation and then pull a card from one of my healing decks (Art of Attention, Wild Unknown, Sacred Path) to help set a tone for my day. This helps ground me and clears my energy for the day ahead.
Let go . . . Fall is the time of transition and change, and with this brings the opportunity to let go of what no longer serves you. Use your yoga practice and the breath to help release some of this energy. Journalling is also great. Allow yourself the time to reflect and go inwards.
Nourish your body through whole foods, warm soups and stews, lots of vegetables, superfoods, spices and immune supportive herbs (astragulus, elderberries, turmeric). Start to transition from summer raw foods to more warming cooked foods to harmonize with nature's rhythms.
The key to Fall is slowing down and taking those moments to breathe, let go and to flow with the changes that this season brings. Resisting and filling our days with too much activity can bring agitation and stress, so establishing a regular routine and taking those quiet moments to tune in will guide us and support us through this season.
