This Kundalini pranayama creates a powerful balance of prana vayu (upward moving energy) and apana vayu (downward moving energy). It is said that this pranyama cleanses the body and clears the mind, helping one experience clarity and brightness in their lives.
Start by sitting comfortably in sukhasana with a tall spine. Begin by taking a few deep ujjayi breaths. From here use the thumb of your right hand to gently close off the right nostril and breathe in and out of the left nostril for 8-26 breaths. Next, inhale and hold the breath briefly and exhale relax, coming back to your natural breath for a few cycles. Now use the thumb of your left hand to close off the left nostril and breathe in and out of the right nostril for 8-26 breaths. Inhale, hold the breath briefly and then relax, coming back to your natural breath for a few cycles.
Bring your hands to your heart centre in anjali mudra (prayer) and begin breath of fire (pumping action of the belly with powerful exhales and passive inhales). Continue for 30 seconds to 1 minute and then rest, coming once again back to your natural breath for a few cycles.
From here, use your thumb of the right hand to block off the right nostril and inhale long and deep through the left. Use the jupiter (index finger) on right hand to block off the left nostril and exhale long and deep through the right nostril. Continue going back and forth, breathing in through the left nostril and exhaling out through the right nostril. This will help rebalance the mind and nerves, creating calm alertness. Continue this breath for 1-3 minutes.
Afterwards, come to a natural breath and sit quietly for a few moments, noticing the effects of the practice on your body and mind, finding a sense of stillness, lightness and crystallized clarity.
By cleansing your mind
your soul will shine through you
